International Day of the Seafarer – June 25th
Good morning everyone,
As you know, the International Day of the Seafarer and its significance this year is remarkable. Seafarers around the world are now working past the expiration of contract extensions because of constraints to facilitate crew changes normally during the pandemic. This situation is primarily caused by closed international borders in most countries, a complete disruption of air travel, and extensive requirements for quarantine when traveling. Many seafarers are now onboard for over 12 months and one can only imagine the additional stress that this causes on seafarers and their families.
June 25th at noon, we are encouraging ships to sound their whistles for one minute to recognize the significant commitment and sacrifice of seafarers
Unlike many countries in the world, Canada continues to be proactive in its approach to crew changes and shore leave. This is a challenge that our industry and government will face for months and well into 2021.
On a related note, the Mission to Seafarers Cycling for Seafarers event also kicks-off tomorrow and we would appreciate any assistance in spreading the word through social media and your own networks (#MTS2020Cycle). More details are available at: https://www.simplyk.io/donation/5ee020516ea7c1002565637d. In view of the significant hardships facing seafarers, hopefully we can make this year a record year for participation and donations.
Thank you for the support!
