Vancouver Wharves

Vancouver Wharves Terminal is a 125-acre bulk facility located east of the Lions Gate Bridge on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet within the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. The facility has been in operation for over 60 years and is easily recognizable by the iconic yellow sulphur piles that have become a landmark in Vancouver. The terminal consists of four vessel berths with rail infrastructure serviced by three Class 1 railways able to receive and unload unit trains, materials handling systems, significant dry bulk and liquid storage capacity, and is equipped with efficient materials handling systems to load and unload ocean-going vessels.

On December 16, 2019, Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Pembina) acquired Kinder Morgan Canada Limited and assumed the long-term Operating Lease Agreement and ownership of Vancouver Wharves. Calgary-based Pembina is a leading transportation and mid-stream service provider that has been serving North America’s energy industry for 65 years. Vancouver Wharves adds significant export terminal capacity to Pembina’s portfolio of assets allowing customers to reach the highest value markets throughout the world.

Safety and environmental compliance are top priorities and Vancouver Wharves has long been recognized as a best-in-class operator for safety and environmental stewardship. Between 2007 and 2019, more than $200 million was invested in the terminal for facility expansion and environmental improvements. Under Pembina’s ownership, Vancouver Wharves will continue to operate safely and efficiently to provide many more years of vitally important terminal capacity to Western Canada’s energy, mining and agricultural sectors.

Servicing the energy, agricultural and resource sector, Vancouver Wharves handles more than four million tonnes of dry bulk cargo and over 3.6 million barrels of liquids annually. Products handled include: export copper concentrates from BC mines; import zinc concentrate destined for BC smelters; formed sulphur exports; agricultural products; and diesel and bio-diesel bulk liquids. The terminal facility has a covered storage for up to 500,000 tonnes of bulk cargo, 180,000 tonnes of sulphur stockpile capacity and 250,000 barrels of existing diesel and bio-diesel storage tanks.

Vancouver Wharves has been a longstanding member and contributor to the local community employing an average of 220 employees, supporting local businesses through procurement, and is a significant tax payer for the District of North Vancouver.
